What is skills management?

Skills management is the structured process of identifying, tracking, and developing the skills your organization needs to succeed. Think of it as a living skills map: it shows who knows what, where the gaps are, and how to close them, so the right people have the right skills at the right time.

By managing skills strategically, HR and L&D teams can align talent with business goals, improve workforce planning, and personalize development opportunities. Digital tools and AI make skills management smarter and more data-driven, but at its core it is still about people: their strengths, ambitions, and potential.

Skills management in practice for L&D teams

A practical way to get started, step by step:

  1. Map the skills you have: gather current skills per team through self-assessments or manager reviews.
  2. Define the skills you need: translate business goals into concrete skill requirements.
  3. Identify the gaps: compare the two lists and prioritize the gaps that block your goals.
  4. Close the gaps with targeted learning: courses, learning paths, and on-the-job practice.
  5. Review regularly: skills age quickly, so revisit your skills map at least twice a year.

Start small. Even a simple skills map for one team gives you better decisions about hiring, training, and internal mobility.
